What can we do?

Just chiming in as a new player. Love how well it runs and that I can use the Enhanced Client. Hearing about bad ganking though later on is making me weary. Not that it isn't a problem on almost every server
Don't let it hesitate you. The only thing you need to stop ganking is a decent player base that can defend about 3 pks at a time. The champ system was designed for the UO days when guilds existed in numbers and people actually played and could defend each other, most mmos instance stuff like that now because griefing is left to people opt in to pvp.

"decent player base"
Which is EXACTLY what this thread was started for, the lack of a playerbase.
If a guild can't resist ganking the solo spawner when they try to get their skills over GM, it will never happen. The solo spawner will leave to where they CAN get their skills over GM and not get ganked.
As pointed out as one of the 'issues' the server has which led to the population drop is EXACTLY what that ganking guild wanted, their names removed so their blue spawn scouters remain hidden (which is an abuse of a game mechanic imho) from those solo spawners. So yes, you guys got what you wanted & it's DIRECTLY led to nobody there for you guys to gank. If this behavior continues then you will merely drive every new player off the server when they come along. Don't think that will be the result of those action??? Look around you & see the result, you can't deny it because the drop from 50-60 characters online to 5-6 in under 3 months time showcases it. People were pretty vocal about disliking the 'new changes'

Really good point pappy. The removal of the ability to spam the player list to see when their scouts are online was only benefitting the gankers. I had a great script to tell me the second they came online, then you'd see their other players go offline when they find you and it switches out to their pvp characters too.
I'd probably play more if I had people to play with though.

One thing I suggested to Dan was a truly random based quest/spawn system. Having a daily/roaming champ spawn, you never know the location or facet etc. That could tie into the tracking system, which i had more plans for for finding treasure/stealables and all sorts of things.
I know we have our monthly event system, id just like something that brings players out to actually do something. But we'd need to make it worthwhile for the loot, maybe arties with limited existence. I think daoc used to have that for realm arties.
Basically UO as it exists officially doesn't cater for what we seem to want from it anymore.
Cool Idea.. but i still wouldnt PvP, and i think that those who dont want to PvP wouldn't bother either :(

I've never really pvpd either. But growing up I had the same thoughts on fps games, thinking I wouldn't like them because people would always be better. Then I got hooked and wasn't as bad as I thought I was

I dont PvP, cuse im worried someone is better, I know everyone is better.. I dont PvP in UO.. cuse all it is, is a "Hey, Look, mines bigger than yours" contest.. no structure, no objective, just a bunch of people running around trying to kill each other. then when its all over, its a bunch of shit talk, and toxicity.. I see no fun there. not at all. I PvP in other games for sure, but other games you have objectives, and special maps, and castle sieges, and, and, and..

I took a pause on playing because there is no luster in the game when it's so darn hard to do anything on the shard. maybe I am just the unluckiest person playing, but after spending hours and hours doing the Halloween event, I did not land jack. Not one single drop landed during the void spawn and I spent countless hours doing the spawn. They only reason I got a dye was because someone was kind enough to give me one. After the event I tried my luck on doing a champs spawn because there was only 7 players on line. The moment I killed the champ I was killed by BRK. Why waist hours of my life playing a game that I cannot advance on, unless paying gold for it. I am literally broke from buying 110 and 115 PS from PKer's that are just selling PS that they steal from other players doing the leg work. All the gold is in champs and they cant be done.

I have tried to pass time doing other things like the fishing quest. turned in tons and tons of chests to the mongers to land 1 115 PS. more countless hours spent to earn nothing. Hell it can take me up to 3 days to land the Crystal Hydra key for the shimmering.

Done venting.

"All the gold is in champs" other than the gold explosion at the end, not really.
Every coin of gold somebody gets for any powerscroll HAD to be looted off of some mob somewhere.
The dark guardian room in doom is decent gold even though the mobs only drop half of what they do on OSI.
The tomb of kings in Ter-Mur (the hallway with the little side rooms) can be great for looting gold.
Toying around in Bedlam slaying the named mobs will get you 50-k gold real quick and it's right by a bank. Plus you get the peerless keys which can be sold on a vendor.
Speaking of vendors, Bags of sending, translocation powder for those bags, golden skulls for doom, peerless keys, imbuing popcorn/ingredients........
all those items sell fairly well while there is a population to support an economy. But everything comes off of mobs to begin with.

Tbh server cannot exists without players.
So i would focus on changes that increase number of active players.
In my case i log from time to time, but mostly as RL is keeping me away and free time i split time between multiple games and mostly movies recently.
My ideas will be bad - but for me Fel was meant to be the place for PVP (just use map with normal trees).
Just give much better rewards there in terms of various activities.

Consider adjusting also rules for macro gathering.
Make this only possible/allowed in Fel and adjust so all gather-able materials show up also there.

I get what Wild Elf is saying. Gold is not the issue, the issue is the drop rate for things. When farming for things, especially events, the average player has little chance. I tried the Halloween event and after 2 hours, nothing and gave up. I didn't want to spend all of my free time hoping to get something. On OSI, most drops get sold so they keep the drop rate low for the Rares people. With a low population, those won't sell much so most people keep them. Why not bump up the drop rate or at least drop some? After getting sick, I only play when I am feeling up to it. I did not even attempt the Krampus thing. I did not want to waste my time on something where I was most likely going to strike out.

The other thing he is referring to is the lack of being able to do spawns. If you get ganked every time you finish a spawn, you aren't going to do it. Then on top of it all, if you need power scrolls, you need to buy them from the same people that won't let you do a spawn. My characters are not geared well enough to go into Bedlam to make all the gold. None of my pets have over 110 PS because they are too expensive. Those that do not have 4-8 hours every day to play won't find it as easy as those that do.

Bottom line is that people need to find value in their game time for them to stay. I understand that it is a narrow margin between being too hard and too easy as far as drops. My honest suggestion would be for Dan to go incognito (new name and discord account) and check out some of the more popular/populated shards and see what they are doing. Make a character and play. Check out the drop rates, the types of drops, the content, etc. In the end, it has to appeal to the majority. The few of us can give suggestions all day long but in the end, it needs to appeal to others as well.

I am not saying gold cant be made elsewhere, but there is a lot of gold to be made in champs. I pick up gold from the mobs as I fight and the 100+ k that falls on the ground. then you have PS, and artifact drops to put icing on that cake. Since I have played I have never had more then 3 mill gold in my bank and my average balance is around 100k. in 29 days the shard I am currently vesting my time in, I have amassed close to 6 million gold doing mostly champs and I get to earn PS to play around with pet taming. taming is my 2nd passion to this game besides BS with the community. I get board doing the same stuff on heritage to scrape together enough gold to buy one PS at a time to build up a pet and I cant enjoy other elements to the the game, because I cant build macros to defend my self from being killed in fel. When I first arrived the events were super fun and you could earn low level PS, and that has not happened again in years. I say end PVP unless its event duels or put in a champ that allows non PVPers to get 105, 110, and 115PS and let the PVPers keep the 120's. Non PVPers will stay out of fel and the PVPers will be forced to actually do the spawns if they want the 120 VS raiding a non PVPer of all their time and effort.

There was an event during the Spring that did give 105 and 110 PS and it was a lot of fun. I have been here for just shy of a year and it was the only event like that.

IDK about anyone else, but i've made a LOT more gold selling peerless keys than i have selling powerscrolls. (or anything on my list a few posts above)
Back when i played on OSI, most viewed farming Lady Mel as the most lucrative thing to go after. (for the hair dye)
Somebody i know does the "underwater" mob but with like 30 clients because for w/e reason they ALL get their own loot packs vs how a normal peerless divides up loot between all that kill it.
I'm not even close to being the richest dude on Heritage & honestly couldn't tell you how long it took me to get to 6 mill but it sounds like you are spending all your gold on powerscrolls for multiple pets. (which i'm pretty sure that whole system was designed to be a gold sink to begin with)
Anyways, if there's still anyone there to buy things, everything on that list i posted above will get you millions in time.
