pirate ship hunting

hey all, decided to try out some of the high seas content. Got the tokuno ship, cannons armed and ready and set out. Found a pirate ship, as soon as i got close, it pretty much instantly destroyed the two cannons i had setup on the side, losing my mats in them (which wasn't cheap...). I still had one front cannon, so i killed off the crew, then positioned the ship to fire, but the cannon balls didn't hit, and i couldn't board the ship because it wasn't scuttled.

So, i rethink my strat, and try to get behind another ship, cause i thought maybe you can't scuttle the ship if the crew is dead. My ship gets hit hard, then i am too slow to position myself, and again my cannons get quickly destroyed. Again i kill the crew from my ship, but after they are dead i cant hit the ship with the cannon , and cant scuttle it to board it.

Looking for some tips if anyone can share. Sank a bit of time and money into this, but have yet to get to board a ship and reap the rewards.

Gargoyle Ship is probably the best next to the Orc for damage. The Tokuno Galleon gives a fishing bonus, but not as useful for fighting.

Use 'Tracking' command to locate pirates, and surprise them. With patience and good navigation get into position.
I ram them in the stern to stay away from cannon fire. Drop a RC on the pirate ship use ranged attacks to remove threat. Then I scuttle.
Two cannons is probably enough, I prefer one on each side mid-ship, so they aren't as vulnerable to damage, and one in the bow helpful if you are chasing. Rowboats are useful to board the scuttle ship, navigate tight places, and gate other players in.
