So on certain lower level paragon chests (earth elemental and gargoyle so far), there seems to be a "non-currency" piece of gold coin and a treasure map as the only loot.
This piece of gold weighs 0 stones and does not register as gold in the bank, it sits there as a piece of gold in the box. it also will not stack with normal gold nor another piece of the strange gold, see screen shots for examples.
