Same with the housing system, same with the guild system. These things are bulked up to act as gold sinks.

Yeah that is done on purpose.

On real UO the "Monk's Robe" was only added after the hued hooded shroud of shadows exploit. They were going for hundreds of millions so UO nerfed them into those robes and sold them also for a cheap price.

Here they have been 50k since day one.
