If you use a refinement amalgamator on a refinement, and rather than combine it with another to upgrade it, if you click the same refinement again, it will say you've completed the amalgamation and received and upgraded version, and then disappear completely.
It should just give you a message saying something like "You can't combine that with itself" or something to that effect, like when trying to combine two refinements of different types.
