Today it was discovered during staff checks / daily report running that a player was using an exploit to obtain gold and other items outside of the intended game play mechanics.
When approached by staff the player acted childish but did admit to the exploit and also pointed out another, non-exploit related, issue that should also be fixed.
They also proclaimed that since I was the Game Master I should have known. Heritage and ServUO work hand and hand implementing and testing the latest code. There are only about 4 of us that are active and while we try our best to make sure code is bug free and stable sometimes issues do arise that were not known before. We all have real life jobs and this is not how we provide for our families, as such I can not be here 24/7 which is why I heavily rely on the decent players of this shard to assist me with keeping the playing field level and fair.
I care very much about the fairness and longevity of the Heritage shard. When you find an exploit you should report it right away.
Players who report exploits right away will be greatly rewarded while those who do not will be punished.
That being said, had long standing damage occurred Heritage would have been reverted but that was NOT THE CASE in this situation.
So what did happen:
1. The player in question was fined 1,000,000gp. This fee will need to be payed on the jailed character before that character will be released.
2. Any items found in the possession of the player regarding the exploited quest were removed.
3. All accounts associated with the player were marked with a 1st offense tag.
4. A check of all in-game gold and recently obtained items was performed, on all Heritage accounts.
In the mean time
all quest givers have been shut off. Once a tested fix is in I will turn back on the quest givers.
In closing - If you discover an exploit you need to let me know right away. I perform daily backups just for that reason and will perform reverts when necessary. These instances are rare but since ServUO and RunUO code core is PUBLIC anyone can scour the code for a weakness and attempt to cause harm. This is something any open source project is susceptible to and it is often overlooked by the majority of players. It is better to get rewarded for finding these issues and reporting them right away.
