The SOS chest has dropped at my feet before, so this was new for me. Might have been a bug introduced recently.
SOS is no longer in my pack, and you can see where it says "You do not have room in your backpack for a fish", yet I had over 400 stones available, and room for almost 90 items, but always before the chest has dropped at my feet if there was not room in my pack. You can also see from the screen shot that the next thing fished up was a regular fish.
