Issue with cross pollinating plants

I'm no expert here but my friend is growing plants and trying to cross pollinate them to get different seeds. She's had two sets of plants that she's attempted to cross pollinate and at the ten day mark they just produce the same seed/colors as the parents. They don't appear to be cross breeding and producing different seeds. Currently the plants in question are ferns and tri-barrel cacti.

It appears that a fern and a tri-barrel cactus don't produce anything special when cross pollinated..

If you are trying to get new seeds here are a few guides that are a must have, link one has a table that will show you what you get when you breed a "xxxx plant" with a "xxxx plant". Link two has a tool that allows you to find the quickest way to the plant you want. Ive been using these guides since the 90s they are spot on.

When you cross breed those two plants, what status message does it give you? does it say something to indicate a successful crossbreed? if so, that is the bug..
